Properties and limitations of an isolated parallel-plate orossed-field single-stage velocity separator are examined. The design objective is taken to be optimization of wanted-particle transmission through the separator in the plane of separation.nIn relation to certain acceptance and separation criteria, a treatment of beam behaviour in phase space is developed, leading to a suitable optimization procedure, For given particles at given momentum, separator length is recommended in terms of the voltage and separator aperture j it is suggested that both these latter parameters should be as large as possible, consistent with practical limitations.
