ACCUMULATION OF THE RADIO-ISOTOPE OF CERIUM BY FRESH-WATER MOLLUSCS

To the ecological factors which have always been present - light, temperature, pressure, salinity, etc. - man has recently added yet another important factor:artificial radioactivity. The level of radioactivity of the earth is being raised considerably, not only by the precipitation of radioactive rain and dust and the appearance of radio-isotopes in the sea-water of the Pacific as a result of atomic explosions, but also by the con¬tamination of rivers with radioactive wastes. It is, therefore, important to investigate the fate of the radioactive isotopes which find their way by one means or another into water.
