THE LINEAR SCANNER IN CLINICAL STUDIES

These tubes are moved by hand, or mechanically, on a rack along the length of the body. Both authors have done a precise definition of the physical properties of their instruments, and have reported valuable data on iodine-131 for detection of remote metastases (Concannon) and for estimation of radioactive iodine uptake in areas of special interest (Pochin) (3). The ORINS machine may have a much wider application, and we therefore decided to explore the possibilities for studying the distribution of other radioisotopes in man by scanning every suitable patient in the hospital who was receiving any radioisotope for diagnosis or treatment. Since the physical properties of the instrument to be discussed are not thoroughly defined as yet, the curves obtained are preliminary and are not conclusive. But, it seemed advantageous to investigate the instrument for its clinical applicability before elaborate physical studies were begun. After all, clinical trials have very often preceded the development of studies of methodology.
