INTERIM REPORT PROCESS DEVELOPMENT OF URANIUM MONOCARBIDE FUEL SLUGS

Stoichiometric uranium monocarbide has been prepared by nonconsumable electrode arc melting of uranium-carbon charges and by carbothermic reduction of uranium-carbon charges and by carbothermic reduction of uranium dioxide. Fabrication processes which are under investigation include nonconsumable-electrode skull casting, induction melting and casting, and hot pressing. Skull cast uranium monocarbide slugs to seven-eights inch diameter by four inches long have been made.
