The progress of extensive pilot plant work on the fluidized bed process for the conversion of radioactive liquid wastes to solids and the progress of construction of a 60-gallon-per-hour demonstrational facility are reported Pilot plant studies for the reporting period were directed toward establishing operability limits for a two-foot square calciner and determining basic data on the dynamics of fluidized beds, such as particle attrition rates and heat transfer rate. A short run in a six-inch diameter calciner using a simulated stainless steel waste indicated no problems that could be attributed to the composition of the feed when these results were compared with the results of calcining aluminum-type wastes.
