Dynamic Factors in the Role of the Caseworker in Work with the Aged.

The proceedings of a 1961 institute on casework services for the aged are documented. Directed primarily toward the casework practitioner, the institute brought together 163 representatives from 77 agencies to consider the problems associated with the aging process, the importance of the caseworker's attitude toward elderly people in general as well as toward the individual client, and the value of the caseworker's services to the elderly. The report opens with a summary of a panel discussion of basic issues in casework with the aging. Work group discussions on the role, attitudes, and functions of caseworkers who serve elderly clients are also summarized. Papers are presented on professional attitudes and behavior in social casework practice with the aging, professional and undergraduate education, group work with the aging, and community organization for services to the aged. The experiences of two elderly clients of a family services agency and a hospital-based social service department are documented in case histories which served as reference points for group discussions of methods, content, techniques, and services in casework diagnosis and treatment for elderly people. A bibliography of casework-related papers by William Posner, to whose memory the institute was dedicated, is included.
