The investigation described in this report is another in the series which is being carried out at the Safety in Mines Research Establishment, Buxton, to determine the relative ease of ignition of the various gases and vapours used or encountered in industry, in order to group them and to choose the representative gases and vapours for test purposes under B.S.1259.nThe possible presence of inflammable sewage gas in manholes and sewers presents a hazard:however, since domestic sewage gas, through bacterial action, consists mainly of methane with perhaps a proportion of hydrogen, and since the proportion of hydrogen in the gas varies, it is not known which is its most appropriate class.
