摘要

Preliminary development of a metal-clad element for the High-temperature Gas-cooled Reactor (HTGR) was carried out early in the program when it was not certain that a graphite-clad element could be available in time for the scheduled startup of the reactor. It was realized that development of a metal-clad fuel element would be only a temporary expedient for checking out the reactor system and that a core using metal-clad elements would not provide an ultimately useful reactor because of the temperature limitations which would be imposed by the metal cladding. The development program of the metal-clad fuel element for the HTGR is summarized in this report.
