Project Shoal is an experiment designed to compare the seismic energy produced by an underground explosion with that produced by a shallow-focus natural earthquake. The Shoal experiment is one of a series of experiments in the Vela Uniform program, a comprehensive research program under the direction of the Advance Research Projects Agency to improve techniques of detecting underground nuclear explo¬sions.
