SURFACE TEMPERATURE ANOMALIES IN MOUNTAIN AREA WEATHER ANALYSIS

Average seasonal temperatures for synoptic map times have been tabu¬lated for the western United States. Although a few of these are available in Weather Bureau publications, the majority have been interpolated from maximum-minimum or average temperature summaries and are used to calculate and plot surface temperature anomalies which are well conserved in air mass propagation over rough terrain and around the clock. This allows more accurate frontal description than is available in ordinary analysis of the orography and sun-affected parameters of pressure, temperature, dew point, and wind.
