The hand array consists of four tubes. Two tubes look at the palms of both hands, and one tube looks at the back finger area of the left hand and another at the back of the right hand. No tubes are provided for the backs of the palms because of the prevalence of radium-dial watches, which often set off the hand alarm. The shoe array consists of two tubes for each shoe. All tubes are shielded by at least 1/2 inch of lead and are mounted on aluminum liners. The four hand-tube signals are fed to a common input, as are those from the four shoe tubes.nThe reason for not following the conventional "left-right" system is that if any extremity is contaminated, it is dangerous to assume that this is the extent of the contamination. Any sign of contamination establishes the need for a complete survey of the individual and his work area.
