FACTORS AFFECTING THE VELOCITY RESOLUTION OF GAS CERENKOV COUNTERS

The former is most effective at low momenta, (< 1 Gev/c), where flight path lengths are reasonably short, say 30 feet or less, whereas the Cerenkov counter is much more suitable at high momenta where flight paths in conventional time-of-flight systems become excessive. In the present paper we shall consider and examine those criteria which affect the design of a high resolution gas Cerenkov counter for use at Nimrod, capable of resolving π-mesons and K-mesons up to 5 Gev/c.
