THE APPLICATION OF F18 LABELLED FLUOROBORATE IONS TO PROBLEMS IN THYROID PHYSIOLOGY

F18 labelled fluoroborate ions have been applied in the elucidation of five different problems in thyroid physiology. a) The effect of oxine and riboflavine diets on iodine uptake - it was shown that the increased iodine uptake is accompanied by an increased uptake of BF-4;this implies a stimulation of the pituitary gland. b) The mode of action of fluoride, thiocyanate and azide ions, all of which inhibit iodine accumulation in the thyroid. The first two anions were found to inhibit also BP-4 uptake;azide ions showed an enhanced BF-4 uptake. c) The effect of sulfhydryl-containing compounds on iodide uptake -an enhanced uptake of BF.
