CERAMIC FUEL REPROCESSING PRELIMINARY DISSOLUTION AND LEACHING STUDIES

The process chemistry of each of four proposed development flow-sheets for processing ceramic nuclear fuels was investigated. The flow-sheets were molten ammonium bifluoride dissolution, grind-leach recovery, sulfuric acid dissolution, and aqueous hydrofluoric acid dissolution. The fuels used in the study were General Electric's ceramic direct-air-cycle fuel and Pratt and Whitney's metal-clod ceramic indirect-cycle fuel for nuclear aircraft.
