The histological study of the distribution of osteoclasts has made possible an autoradiographic study of the turnover of tritiated proline in bone and the relationship of parathyroids to matrix breakdown. The authors are seeking to characterize parathyroid effects on hydroxyproline breakdown and release from bone, both quantitatively and as a tagged imino acid. In addition we have been able to use the effects of parathyroidectomy on lactation in the rat as a tool to start a study on the effect of changing the calcium ion concentration on membrane transport.
