To meet the need for neutron absorption in the Kiwi reactor, con¬trol plates containing B were fabricated. A powder mix of 80 w/o Al-20 w/o B was hot pressed to form a rectangular plate 15 in. x 4-1/2 in. x 0.400 in. The plate was canned in flattened Al tubing, heated to 400°C, and reduced by rolling to 0.070 in. thickness. The can was then removed and the sheet further reduced by rolling bare at 400°C to 0.050 in. The final sheet was sheared to 13 in. x 4 in. and formed to a 1-7/8 in. radius curvature at 250-300°C. Fastening holes were punched in the curved plate to provide a method of assembly.
