A DEVICE FOR CONTAMINATING GRAINS WITH RADIOACTIVE MATERIAL

This report describes a machine designed to contaminate rodent diets such as rolled oats and pearled barley. The machine consists of a vertical cylinder with a funnel-shaped bottom in which the grain is tumbled by a jet of compressed gas. An isotope solution is atomized in the gas stream as it is injected through the base of the cylinder. The exhaust gases are decontaminated by a dust filter and an activated carbon filter. The unit is powered by compressed nitrogen and is capable of contaminating a quantity of grain evenly with minimum wetting.
