A New Method for the Determination of Iodine-131 in Herbage Including Measurements made in Autumn 1961

A radiochemical method for the determination of iodine-131 in samples of herbage has been developed to supercede the distillation method employed in the past. The modified method enables a larger sample to be analysed, thus reduc¬ing the sampling error and increasing the sensitivity.nResults obtained by the modified chemical method on herbage samples collected during the Russian series of nuclear weapons tests in late 1961 are compared with (a) results obtained on the same sample using the distillation method, and (b) results obtained by gamma spectrometric analysis of a number of samples. Levels of iodine-131 in herbage and milk samples collected at this time are compared.
