A method for the solvent extraction of caesium from neutral or alkaline solutions into nitrobenzene as the caesium dipicrylaminate ion pair is described. The extraction coefficient, which shows the expected linear dependence on dipicrylaminate concentration in the organic phase, is approxi¬mately constant above pH 8, and falls of steeply below pH 6. This permits a simple back-extraction of caesium by dilute acid.nThe system appears to be suitable for the recovery of caesium from the alkaline phosphate-molybdate solution obtained by dissolving loaded AMP in sodium hydroxide solution;the comparatively low solubilities of dipicrylamine (~0.025 M) and its caesium salt (~0.04 M) in nitrobenzene at room temperature would render the volumes involved comparatively large for a commercial process, but they should not be excessive for a continuous method.
