A STUDY OF THE FEASIBILITY IN THE UNITED KINGDOM OF A RADIATION PROCESS FOR THE INHIBITION OF SPROUTING- IN STORED POTATOES

The present organisation of the potato industry in the United Kingdom has been reviewed in conjunction with the present methods of storage and sprout suppression. The costs of alternative methods of sprout suppression have been estimated for comparison with the estimated costs of the radiation treatment. Advantages and disadvantages of the radiation treatment and the factors involved in the costing analysis have been briefly outlined and discussed.nThe commercial feasibility of the radiation processing of potatoes has been considered for the United Kingdom potato industry.
