A general method of independently estimating the heat of formation ⊿Hf0, and free energy of formation ⊿Ff0, of inorganic compounds has been developed from the work of Linus Pauling in formulating an electronegativity scale. The result is a simple equation involving three parameters characteristic of each ion. Each valence state of an element may be assigned a value for each of the parameters. These parameters may be evaluated for any ion if at least three experimental heats of formation or free ener¬gies of formation are known.nThe equation, has been applied to the correlation of known ⊿Hf0, data for 34 monovalent and divalent cations and 32 anions, including the metallic halides, oxides, sulfides, and compounds such as the sulfates, carbonates, and tungstates.
