Because of the experimental difficulties involved, the heats of formation of many compounds have never been determined or are in serious doubt, in spite of the extensive use of oxygen bomb calorimetry for many decades. The application of precision bomb calorimetry to many of these materials has now been possible through the development of techniques for the use of high-purity fluorine as the bomb oxidant.nA description is given of methods and materials which have been used for handling fluorine safely in routine calorimetric experiments. The construction of suitable combustion bombs and the availability of inert sample supports is discussed.
