EVALUATION OF ECONOMIC BENEFITS FROM A CONTINUING CIVILIAN NUCLEAR POWER PROGRAM

In performing this task, the Institute proceeded from the assumption that the major benefits of the program must be sought in the contributions nuclear power is making and will continue to make toward the attainment of national goals. Nuclear power may be unique, perhaps the most unique and useful phenomenon ever developed by man's ingenuity;but its major product—electricity—is commonplace, and thus the develop¬ment of civilian nuclear power cannot be justified by the marvels of the atom itself. Such justification can only come from the support which civilian nuclear power does and will contribute to broad national objectives.
