APPLICATIONS OF RADIOISOTOPES AND ACTIVATION ANALYSIS TO TEXTILE MATERIALS AND PROCESSES

Gamma-ray spectra are presented for most of the commercial textile fibers and a list of the isotopes identified in each fiber is given. It was demonstrated that copper, manganese, and gold could be added to cotton yarns as tracers for activation analysis. Size and finish solutions were also tagged with gold and activation analysis used to determine size and finish pick-up on cotton yarn and fabric. The use of a beta-gauge for measuring cloth weight continuously was demonstrated.
