Computational results are presented for the effect of field errors on the resolution of two types of high resolution beta-ray spectrometers proposed previously, one type employing a curved exit slit and the second a shifted source. Specifically, results are reported for il- 4 lustrative cases in which the coefficient (6) of p in the polynomial representing the magnetic field as a function of the distance from thenequilibrium orbit, is assigned other than optimum values. In the case of the 324.5° curved exit slit spectrometer, for example, a -4 resolution of the order of 10 is achieved for a fractional solid angle of transmission (rhombic distribution of emission angles) equal to 1. 3% when 6 is in error by 0. 1, and a resolution of the order of 10 is obtained for a 2. 7% solid angle and a 0.3 error in 6 .The latternerror in the coefficient 6 corresponds to a field error of 0. 077% at the extreme points of the selected orbits, and it is expected that a smaller error than this will result from the use of suitably designed field coils in a non-ferromagnetic spectrometer of this type.
