The ideal table would be one which would allow the full use of the ten significant figure capability of the calcu¬lator, but its size would be prohibitively large so that for a practical table some compromise must be made between accuracy, range, and the increments between the numbers in the table. If reference is made to the two well known indexes of mathematical tables , it can be seen that the number and types of tables of roots is somewhat limited.nFor the tables in the present work, the choices of the range of numbers whose roots are listed, the increments between the numbers, and the accuracy of the roots were made on the basis of recommendations of engineers and mathematicians who have used desk calculators more or less continuously. The wiseness of this choice was indicated by the large number of requests for the present table even before the calculations were completed.
