The investigations described in this report cover four areas:(l) physical testing of wood-polymer combinations;(2) impregnation of wood with monomers;(3) chemical aspects of the operations including polymerization rates, dose rate dependence of polymerization rates, affects of additives;and (4) the effects of gamma radiation on certain physical properties of wood.nWood-polymer combinations based on white pine, birch and white oak were prepared and tested. It was found in all cases that the proportional limit in compression and the hardness were increased over values for the base wood. The absorption of water by white pine-polymer combinations was substantially less than in the case of unmodified white pine, but the significance of this fact must await the results of additional work, including dimensional changes experienced during immersion in water.
