A commercial gamma-scattering density gauge was modified for use in coal by increasing the source-detector separation to 31.3 cm to obtain a linear calibration curve for a density range 3 of 0. 9 to 1. 2 gm/cm and by eliminating response to low energy photons with a Ta-Cd-Cu foil filter around the Geiger tubes. Calibration data and field experience are given.
