This Report describes a method of predicting can surface and end-fitting temperatures by the use of a one-dimensional model. The method is first used to predict temperature distributions for a standard problem. Good agreement is reached with the exact solutions found by analogue and digital computer methods. The model is then compared with a typical three-dimensional relaxation solution and a typical three-dimensional analogue solution of the problem and the extent of agreement is discussed and found satisfactory. It is shown that end-cap temperatures are relatively insensitive to small variations in the conductivity of the ceramic and that for many practical cases the insulator may be assumed perfect.
