RADIATION-INDUCED REACTIONS in swollen polymers

An investigation of the reactions induced in swollen polymers by γ-irradiation being carried out with the aim of producing novel poly­mers, or imparting new or improved properties to macromolecular substances. This is a report on the work conducted with casein during this year. The specific objectives of the research were; (l) to study the structural changes induced by gamma irradiation of casein in the presence and absence of a limited amount of water, and the stability and possibly the nature of the free radicals produced; (2) to study the physical and chemical properties of the products obtained by irradiation of casein swollen with various monomers and/or solvents, including, where possible, adequate characterization of the grafted products; (3) to investigate post-irradiation reactions of irradiated casein with various monomers, in the presence of swelling agents where necessary.
