摘要

Soon after the first demonstration of nonconservation of parity, the longitudinal polarization of P beta rays was measured in cooperation with members of the Physics Division. The polarization was found to be —v/c, as predicted by the new beta-decay theory, within the experimental error of ±2%.nFrom measurements of the radiations of Dy159 , an electron-capture decay scheme was proposed, and the disintegration energy was deduced. The 8-min Ga74 was separated from the fission products of U235, and its fission yield was found to be 3.4 x 10~4%. This is believed to be the first observation of mass 74 in the fission process. The energies of the two principal gamma rays in the decay of Y88 were measured as 0.899 ± 0.004 and 1.832 ±0.006 Mev by using a 3x3 in. Nal scintillation spectrometer. A method is described for measuring the sum spectra from gamma-scintillation spectrometers.
