In today's world of bigger and better mouse traps, the trend toward complete automation is brought about by several factors, three of which are economics, safety, and speed of response. The problem undertaken here is to devise a time-optimum automatic controller for a nuclear power reactor which should be consistent with the safety policies of the Atomic Energy Commission.nAn automatic controller designed to be "fail-safe" and time optimum in its response is then justified as being economic if its presence manages to eliminate one serious accident which might otherwise have occurred or if better utilization of the power plant is obtained.
