THERMAL EXPANSION OF ALPHA-ZIRCONIUM SINGLE CRYSTALS

Single crystals of alpha zirconium have been used to measure, between room temperature and 860℃, the thermal expansions in the two principal crystallographic directions of the hexagonal-close-packed structure. The measurements were made with a dilatation interferometer.nThese results do not differ greatly from previous thermal expansion data which were obtained by measurements of the lattice constants at different temperatures. But the dilata¬tion data are for the entire temperature range, whereas the lattice-constant data were for two different ranges. The dilatation data indicate that the lattice constants at the higher temperature were subject to error because of contamination by gasebus impurities.
