PRELIMINARY DESIGN REPORT FOR MARINE PRODUCTS DEVELOPMENT IRRADIATOR FACILITY

The facility is to be used for research and development conducted by the Atomic Energy Commission and the Department of the Interior on the preservation of marine products by gamma irradiation at "pasteurization" levels using cobalt-60 as the radiation source, as well as to demonstrate the feasibility of such techniques on a commercial basis. The MPDI is to operate as a production facility, with one-shift continuous operation. In most cases products to be irradiated will be delivered to the facility packaged and ready for irradiation. Refrigerated storage (31 to 35°F) for product before and after irradiation will be provided.
