SOME CAUSES OF BRITTLENESS IN CHROMIUM-NICKEL AUSTENITIC STAINLESS STEELS A Literature Survey

In this survey an attempt has been made to collect evidence on two possible causes of brittleness in austenitic stain¬less steels, namely, the parts played by sigma phase and chromium carbide precipitations.nThe general circumstances under which each of the above precipitates occur have been studied. Additional alloy element effects have been reviewed and methods of preventing or controlling the formation of carbide and sigma phase are discussed.
