Two stainless steel containers were filled with lithium hydride using the casting process. The first container, a attest can, simulated the SNAP 10A shield in- size and volume; the second con tainer was an actual SNAP 10A shield vessel with a modified lower head. Both cast containers held about 200 pounds of lithium hydride.nThe casting equipment and the casting process functioned as planned, producing two sound castings. Both castings were free of shrink-pipes and casting voids, although low density or crack¬ed areas were noted along the centers-line of the castings. Both , exhibited lithium hydride bulk densities in excess of 92 percent (greater than 0.72 grams per milliliter) which is equal to 'or better than the average cold pressed lithium hydride (with honey comb) density.nIt was concluded that the lithium hydride casting process showed great promise as a cheap, versatile, and fast method of pro ducing SNAP shadow shields.
