In this experiment a measurement of the frequency distribution of the normal modes of vibration of nickel was attempted by a new method. In this method the neutrons which are inelastically scattered from a single crystal sample are compared for several scattering angles and several orientations of the crystal. This comparison allows the coherent one-phonon inelastic scattering to be removed and leaves the incoherent one-phonon inelastic scattering which is proportional to the frequency distribution. While no difficulties were encountered that suggest the method will not work, this measurement was only partially successful because of limited resolution.
