RF energy is introduced into the disc-loaded deflecting structure by means of a coupler, consisting of a waveguide mode transformer. In the absence of a well-matched terminating impedance for the disc-loaded waveguide, an approximately matched absorber was moved along inside it. This made it possible to plot the input admittance of the coupler corresponding to matched output conditions. Definitive couplers were matched by machining certain dimensions in stages and observing changes in the Smith chart plot.
