PILOT PLANT PRODUCTION OF URANIUM TETRAFLUORIDE BY THE WINLO AQUEOUS PRECIPITATION PROCESS

Pilot-scale equipment was developed for the production of metal-grade uranium tetrafluoride (green salt) by the Winlo aqueous reduction-precipitation process. The green salt was made in Pilot Plant 100-gallon, 200 -gallon, and 1000-gallon precipitation units. Semihard rubber tank linings and Saran-lined piping favorably withstood contact with the corrosive Winlo solutions (HF, H2S04, HN03, HCl). Impervious-graphite immersion heaters and a steam-heated, stainless steel dryer for drying the green salt worked well and did not deteriorate excessively.
