POLYPHENYL ANALYSIS

Inorganic salts on inert supports have been investigated as column packings in gas chromatographic separations of organic compounds. These packings have proved highly satisfactory for separating polyphenyls from biphenyl through p-hexaphenyl. They were satisfactory for both qualitative and quantitative analyses.nLithium chloride columns (one inch diameter) were successfully used for preparatory scale work. Adequate resolution was obtained with the large-scale column. However, a small sample must be used because the capacity of the salt columns is less than that of the conventional organic-type columns. The lower capacity stems from the adsorption-desorption operation in solid-phase columns rather than the solution-evaporation mechanism found in gas-liquid systems. A conventional thermal-conductivity-type detector proved adequate for pre-paratory scale work.
