Experiments have been carried out in a test section which, in cross section, resembles part of a rod cluster type fuel element for a boiling water reactor. Measurements were made of heat transfer coefficient, pressure drop and burnout heat flux as a function of mass velocity, quality, rod spacing and secondary heat flux on the surrounding elements.nWhen burnout heat flux is plotted against exit quality an apparent augmentation of the flux was noted for the condition where both surfaces of the duct were heated as compared to the value obtained with just the inner surface heated. Under certain conditions this increase may be explained by postulating a simple flow model incorporating current ideas on burnout while for other conditions the picture is very confused.
