EXTRACTION OF THORIUM AND URANIUM BY MEANS OF TRI-N-OCTYL AMINE

This report deals with the extraction of thorium (IV) and uranium (VI) from nitric acid medium by means of organic solutions of tri-n-octyl amine.nThe role of the diluents is emphasized and we draw the tentative conclusion that ideal diluents should have a low dipole moment and a relatively high dielectric constant. The diluents influence, however, is complex and not the same on the extraction of U and Th. We show that the separation of U and Th can be improved by a factor 2 by using the prober diluents.
