The sample is treated with 1:1 hydrochloric acid to dissolve any combined carbon compounds. Any free carbon is left undisclosed as a black suspension. This is filtered on to a prepared grouch crucible and after thorough washing and drying, the crucible and its contents are placed in a combustion tube at 950-1000°C and any carbon present is determined by measuring the carbon dioxide produced using a gasometrical method.
