REVIEW OF HYDRAULIC PROBLEMS ON THE BONUS REACTOR PRESSURE CONTROL SYSTEM

Y-12 Engineering personnel made a study of the BONUS reactor pressure control system to determine the cause of the malfunction of the hydraulic controls on the major steam valves. It was con¬cluded that the principal contributor to the valve trouble was the high moisture content of the phosphate-ester hydraulic fluid. This excessive moisture reacted with the hydraulic fluid to pro¬duce an acid which, in turn, corroded the steel components of the system and produced fine abrasive particles that eroded the servo metering surfaces.nModifications were recommended that should alleviate the cur¬rent problems.
