A comparative type apparatus was developed for measuring the thermal conductivity of thin (0.050 to 0.150 inch) specimens of solid materials having relatively high thermal conductivities, both prior to and after irradiation.nThe apparatus has been calibrated for use with 1/2-inch square specimens having thermal resistance values in the range of ap¬proximately 1 to 10 sec-t/cal. In this range of thermal resist¬ances values, the precision of the apparatus was found to be ±0.06 to 0.1 sec-°C/cal. To date, all measurements have been carried out at an average specimen temperature of 120°C, but this range can be extended to 100 to 200°C without major modifications to the apparatus. Also, it is felt that the apparatus can readily be cali¬brated and used for measurements of specimens with thermal re¬sistance values well above 10 sec-°C /cal. Complete procedures for the remote in-cell measurement of the thermal conductivity of irradiated specimens have been developed and are described in detail.
