The spectrophotometric determination of uranium with 3-(2-arsonophenyl-azo)-4,5-dihydroxy-2,7-naphthalenedisulfonic acid was modified and applied in the presence of large amounts of molybdenum, which is shown to be without effect. An extensive investigation was made of the interference of numerous foreign ions. The usual masking reagent is ethylenediaminetetraacetic acid. In the present work the use of sodium cyanide as a supplementary complexing agent was found to give significant improvement in the tolerance for cadmium, cobalt, copper, gold, iron, mercury, nickel, ruthenium, and zinc. The relative standard deviation of the procedure is shown to be less than 0.4% for a single determination.
