To obtain a better understanding of the properties of the uranium atom, a detailed study of the optical spectrum of uranium is being made. Because of the extremely complex spectrum from uranium atoms, high resolution spectroscopic apparatus and very accurate measurements are needed. This report is a copy of a talk given at the regular LASL Tuesday morning colloquium on October 15, 1963. The high resolution spectroscopic systems being used in this study and the rapid precision data reduction techniques using high speed digital computers are de¬scribed. Partly as a result of this study, the practical routine spectro-graphic resolution limit has decreased by about a factor of six and routine wave number measurements can be made at a rate 100 times faster, with 10 times better accuracy, than was possible five years ago.
