Investigation of the Perturbation Flow Field in a Gas-Filled Spinning Rotor Due to Stationary Probes

The flow field in a rapidly spinning rotor into which a heavy gas has been inserted in investigated when a stationary probe is present. Data consists of static pressure readings for several radial positions of the probe, pressures approximated on the basis of gas inventories and rigid-body motion, and schlieren photographs. The observed pressures are compared with the calculated pressures. There are indications of a possible countercurrent flow. Data from different positions cannot be compared because each probe position effects a different perturbation field. Graphical analysis of schlieren data is not an accurate means of determining the Mach number of the glow, although it does indicate significant deviation from rigid-body motion. Suggestions for future research are included. 10 refs., 11 figs., 2 tabs.
