The advantage of germanium over silicon in the pair production region is not so marked since the cross section increases only as Z², however, in trying to arrive at a "figure of merit" in the pair production region other factors such as the bremstrahlung cross section should be considered.nThe main limitation of germanium detectors is their low efficiency, but with the development of larger volume detectors there is little doubt that they will be used increasingly in place of sodium iodide scintillation counters when high resolution is of importance.
