Consolidation and cladding of tungsten-50 volume per cent UO2 with various refractory metals by gas-pressure bonding and high-temperature reactions of UO2 with such materials were studied. Tungsten, rhenium, molybdenum, tungsten-26 w/o rhenium, and molybdenum-50 w/o rhenium were considered.nTungsten-50 volume per cent UO2 powder compacts having uniform dispersions of UO2 shot were achieved without use of a binder. After vacuum oulgassing and presintering at 900 C in hydrogen, specimens with densities up to 99 per cent of theoretical were obtained by gas-pressure bonding 3 and 6 hr at 1650 C and 10,000 and 20,000 psi. Use of a tantalum foil getter in the bonding container resulted in improved microstruclure and density.
